‘Ask the Medical Oncologist’ about blood cancers
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - Gilda’s Club South Jersey’s satellite, The Living Room, will present “Ask the Medical Oncologist” about blood cancers today in the Dr. Joseph Stella Conference Room of the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute in the AtlantiCare Health Park, Building 400. The event is free and includes lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m.
Neha Chawla MD, adjunct professor, department of hematology/oncology, Fox Chase Cancer Center, and Elizabeth Mazdin, campaign specialist in special events from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, will discuss blood cancers. Mazdin will lead a panel of empowered blood cancer survivors.

Sharing intimate conversation about life and death
PHILADELPHIA - “Billosophy: Life ~ Circus ~ Death” is a one-man physical theater show in which Bill Forchion, of Vermont and originally from Hammonton, shares his intimate conversation about life and death and things in between, namely the circus. Forchion will present his show as part of the 2016 Fringe Festival at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, 5900 Greene St.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15, 8:30 p.m. Sept. 16, 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. Sept. 17, 1 p.m. Sept. 18, 8:30 p.m. Sept. 23 and 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. Sept. 24.
After training as a singer, dancer and actor, Forchion learned that there were very few roles for a tall black man on Broadway. His path ultimately led him to Clown College and contracts to tour with various circuses including Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. In between touring, he found work in Hollywood, where he worked as an actor and stunt man including appearances in US. Marshals, Cradle to the Grave, the Polar Express and the ESPN mini-series “The Bronx is Burning.” He has stunt doubled for Lou Gosset Jr., been beat up by Jet Li, hung out of helicopters and acted as a San Francisco 49er among other things. But as many good clowns who try to settle down find out, he’s not ready to stay in one place and he has lots of stories to share – and Billosophy was born!

Love to cook? Here’s your chance for a culinary career
MAYS LANDING - The Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College will host an open house for prospective students who love to cook and are interested in starting a culinary career at noon Sept. 16 at the Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike, M-Building.
The academy offers two-year degree programs in culinary arts, baking and pastry, and food service management, and short-term specialization programs in hot foods, baking and pastry, food service management and catering.
The academy also offers two one-year certificate programs, Baking and Pastry Certificate I and Culinary Arts Certificate I. These two-semester certificates are designed to provide students with career training for entry-level positions. The certificates also can be used as a foundation for completing an associate degree at the Academy of Culinary Arts.
ACA students have many opportunities to gain hands-on experience throughout the year.
Open houses are scheduled for at the college-wide open house at 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 16; 5:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 17; and 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 9.

Buena Vista to hold Shredder Event on Saturday
BUENA VISTA - The second annual Buena Vista Township Shredder Event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 17, rain or shine, in the parking lot of the Buena Vista Municipal Building, 890 Harding Highway.
This event is for township residents only and proof of residency is required. All documents and records received will be securely shredded. There is a limit of three boxes per resident or business. No newspapers, magazines, phone books, binders/accordion files will be accepted.
Also, small computer and electronic items and prescription medication will be accepted for disposal.
Hammonton Education Foundation will hold its annual Recycling Central
HAMMONTON - The Hammonton Education Foundation will hold its annual Recycling Central event from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 17 at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society grounds on the corner of Third and French streets. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in this annual event to recycle various items and support community organizations.
The Atlantic County Library System’s Hammonton branch will collect most types of books. Acceptable genres include children’s books, cookbooks, self-help books, biographies and novels suitable for family reading. Encyclopedias and textbooks will not be accepted. Donated books may be added to the library’s collection or used for its book sales, which raise money for library programming. “Recycling Central is a great opportunity for us to give back and be part of the community,” branch manager Kitty Ostrum said. “We want to be very visible.”
Several other community organizations will participate in Recycling Central:
• The Hammonton Lions Club will collect prescription eyeglasses, non-prescription reading glasses, sunglasses, glasses cases and hearing aids. The items will be sent to the New Jersey Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, where they will be cleaned and packaged for distribution to individuals in need throughout the world.
• The Hammonton High School Green Earth Club will collect old cell phones.
• Migrant Outreach of South Jersey will collect folding chairs (metal, lawn and beach chairs), luggage (gym bags, canvas bags and backpacks) and mats (beach mats, yoga mats or stadium seats).
• DocuVault Delaware Valley will have a mobile paper shredding unit on site to provide safe, secure shredding of documents.
• Residents may shred up to three 33-gallon bags of paper for $20. Businesses will be charged on a sliding scale, ranging from $50 for up to 150 pounds to $250 for up to 1,000 pounds.
Receipts for tax purposes will be provided. Proceeds will benefit the Hammonton Education Foundation, which raises money to fund innovative projects in the Hammonton School District.
Recycling Central is part of the town’s Green Weekend, which also includes the town-wide yard sale on Sept. 17 and the Green Day Festival on Sept. 18.
New vegetarian workshops at Academy of Culinary Arts
MAYS LANDING - A new vegetarian workshop series with Academy of Culinary Arts alumna Chef Christina Martin, who has worked in Philadelphia restaurants including Blackfish and Vedge, will begin Sept. 17. Workshops will be held in Kitchen 1 of the Academy of Culinary Arts on the Mays Landing Campus of Atlantic Cape Community College at 5100 Black Horse Pike.
The following workshops are scheduled:
•“Introduction to Plant-based Cooking” will cover the basics on getting organized in the kitchen, stocking a plant-based kitchen and shopping strategies, Sept. 17.
•“Fall Farmers Market in New Jersey” will explore recipes using cauliflower, winter greens and squashes from local farmers markets to create nourishing, plant-based dishes, Oct. 1.
•“Plant-based Kitchen Staples,” will explore plant-based alternatives to common foods like stocks, dairy and proteins, Oct. 15.
•“Plant-based Thanksgiving” will cover how to create traditional dishes using plant-based ingredients, Nov. 5.
•“Plant-based Desserts” will explore creating desserts without dairy that are nutritious and delicious, Nov. 19.
•“Seven Greens Plant-based” puts a twist on the traditional seven fishes dinner using seven unique greens dishes, Dec. 3.
Each workshop runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $65.
Participants must wear closed-toe, kitchen-safe shoes and bring a chef’s knife, if possible.

Career in gas industry can begin at info session

Atlantic Cape Community College will hold an information session about its new utility line locate technician training at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Atlantic Cape’s Mays Landing Campus, 5100 Black Horse Pike, Building T. Training will begin on Oct. 10.
This comprehensive, 70-hour course includes classroom and field training. Topics include: inspection of pipes, location markings, accident awareness and prevention, reading pipeline drawings, using locator equipment and introduction to word/resume writing.
Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the Utility Damage Prevention Operator Qualification Exam. There are jobs available locally for people who pass the exam.

•Introduction to WordPress teaches participants the power and ease of using WordPress to create websites, beginning Sept. 19. Cost is $179.
•Intermediate WordPress, teaches the finer points of themes, plug-ins, customization and more, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., four Mondays, beginning Nov. 7. Cost is $189.
•Advanced Course in Digital Image Manipulation, covers vectors, the clone tool, compositing images, creating textures and optimizing images for web, 6 to 9 p.m., five Wednesdays, beginning Jan. 13. Cost is $179.
•Introduction to Adobe Photoshop CS6, teaches how to modify and combine scanned photographs to create realistic composite images, use painting tools and blending modes, perform adjustments to contrast and color balance and use layers, 6 to 9 p.m., two Mondays and two Wednesdays, beginning Dec. 5. WINSLOW - Meteorologist Dan Skeldon will be master of ceremonies at the Hammonton Cancer Foundation’s ninth annual “Helping our Neighbors” fundraiser set for Oct. 1 at the Winslow Manor at Hay and Hall streets. The event begins at 6 p.m. and features a buffet dinner with homemade desserts, a silent auction and an honor/memory slideshow.
Skeldon, a Cornell University graduate, has been forecasting South Jersey weather for 13 years. He speaks about the weather to more than 100 groups each year and donates his time to help many local South Jersey organizations including humane societies and the American Red Cross.
The event’s entertainment program, organized by Dawn Baldwin, will also include live piano music, Dance Magic ballet dancers and disc jockey Joe Flood.

Free lecture on Holocaust Denial at Kramer Hall
HAMMONTON - Rebekah Sabo, a Stockton University student, will present a free lecture, “Holocaust Denial,” at noon Sept. 21 at Kramer Hall, the university’s instructional site at 30 Front St.
Even though there is an abundance of evidence that the Holocaust occurred, large numbers of people have tried to refute its existence. Organizations and individuals have claimed that the entire event was a hoax and some have negated and manipulated the historical proof of the genocide of Jews and other groups by the Nazis.
This presentation will discuss these allegations as well as the landmark court case of Holocaust denier David Irving, an author who was discredited after bringing an unsuccessful libel suit against the American historian Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books. A British court ruled against him and found that he “deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence,” including minimizing Adolf Hitler’s role in the Holocaust.
Sabo is a senior studying literature and education and a first-year graduate student in Stockton’s Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies program.
