WINSLOW – Two muggers brutally attacked a woman walking alone on a Winslow street, slamming her head into a steel pole before they ran off with her purse, authorities said.
Winslow police said they arrested the man and a 15-year-old boy who allegedly beat up the 36-year-old victim Friday night. The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries she suffered in the assault.
The victim told police she was walking along Hayes Mill Road around 10:20 p.m. when she saw the man and teen. Nervous because she was alone, the woman crossed over to the opposite side of the street to get away from them, police said.
But the man, 22-year-old William J. Mcelhenny, and teen “closed in on her” and attacked the woman from behind, police said.
Both attackers struck the woman’s head, then slammed her head into the steel pole of a traffic sign, according to police. “Mcelhenny and the juvenile continued to beat the victim on her head and back until she released her purse,” police said, adding the assailants also took her cellphone.
Officers responded and cordoned off the area, and a K-9 Unit from nearby Berlin Borough tracked down the victim’s purse.
Police found the teen, who had an airsoft gun stuffed in his pants. It had been defaced, with the orange tip removed, so that it resembled a real handgun, police said.
Detectives determined Mcelhenny was a suspect and arrested him at his home on the 300 block of Garden Road in Atco.
Police charged the teenager, whom they did not identify, and Mcelhenny with armed robbery, conspiracy, possession of a weapon and aggravated assault.
Mcelhenny was held in Camden County Jail and the teen was held at the county’s juvenile detention facility in Blackwood.
