RIVERSIDE – A man wearing nothing but underwear left behind an unholy mess after vandalizing a Riverside church, authorities said.
The intruder threw Bibles, sprayed a fire extinguisher, and dumped marijuana on top of the lectern at First Moravian Church, police said.
Authorities said a parishioner was detaining the man, 19-year-old Mark A. Araujo, when officers arrived at the Bridgeboro Street church around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Beverly man had entered the church while it was closed, stripped down to his underwear and caused “extensive damage,” police said.
He broke musical instruments, religious artifacts, Christmas decorations and stained glass windows, according to police.
Police arrested Araujo after a brief struggle and charged him with burglary, desecration of venerated objects, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and marijuana possession. He was turned over to a hospital for evaluation, police said.
