MAYS LANDING - New Jersey bicyclists are gearing up for a silent ride to honor an elementary school teacher killed while cycling.

The Ride of Silence tribute ride takes place in Mays Landing on Sunday morning to honor Michael Dare-Gentile (dehr jen-TIL’-ee), known as Mr. G. It begins and ends at the Williams Davies Middle School.

Dare-Gentile was struck and killed by a car in October. Tribute organizer Debbie Kaighn says when riders reach the location where he was struck they’ll place flowers at a ghost bike, a rider-less bicycle painted white.

The route is 5 miles (8 kilometers) long and will be cycled at 10 mph (16 kph). Helmets must be worn.

The tribute ride is associated with the worldwide Ride of Silence , which takes place each May and is meant to quietly raise awareness that cyclists are sharing roadways with motorists.
