A look at crime statistics in Camden County for the first six months of 2017
WINSLOW TWP. - New Jersey State Police are investigating a series of alleged sexual assaults reported over a two-week period at Ancora Psychiatric Hospital, according to a spokeswoman for the N.J. Department of Human Services.
The four reported cases occurred between July 18 and August 2. One report was determined "unfounded," and another case that allegedly occurred in a hallway bathroom in Cedar Hall B was closed without an arrest.
Police are continuing to investigate two assaults reported at 8:45 p.m. on July 21 in a patient's room in Cedar Hall A, and at 3 a.m. on July 25 in an unknown location.
The accusers did not report that any weapons were used in the assaults. In each case, the alleged victims were hospital patients.
A representative from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office was brought in last week to the hospital to train supervisors how to preserve evidence in cases of alleged assaults, the state spokeswoman confirmed. A spokeswoman from the prosecutor's office did not respond to questions about the training.
In June, the state-operated hospital held 389 patients, nearly the hospital's lowest census count in 15 years.
Between January and March, the hospital reported five assaults against patients and staff, resulting in "moderate" injuries requiring treatment by a physician. In 2016, there were 36 assaults against patients and staff, including one resulting in "major" injuries that required hospitalization.
