Once again, Congressman Frank LoBiondo has misled his own constituents. Although we shouldn’t be surprised since it’s a continuation of his previous actions, with the chasm between his local rhetoric and his Washington voting record.
Originally, he endorsed his Republican party’s presidential candidate, Donald Trump, even though he knew how much damage he had done to Atlantic City and the rest of South Jersey. However, he withdrew that support after Trump’s shameful statements regarding his sexual treatment of women.
But apparently LoBiondo wasn’t as outraged as he acted, because on Election Day he again changed his mind. We’ll never know how many people who voted for him would have reconsidered had they known of his final about-face.
His actions were cowardly on a couple of levels. He either decided that he could overlook Trump’s numerous negatives, including bigotry and sexism, or he decided that if the notoriously vindictive Trump won, he would be personally rejected for his nonsupport.
So here we are, not only with a new president who is looked upon by half of America and the majority of the world as a self-serving narcissistic incompetent with no military or governmental experience, and we have gutless Republican elected officials like Mr. LoBiondo who were unwilling to speak up about the obstacles inherent in Trump’s possible election to the most difficult, high-priority job in the world: president of the United States.
Trump’s real problem now, and by extension LoBiondo’s, is how does he maintain his support from those he won over by his rabble-rousing pontificating when it becomes apparent that he has no clue how to deliver on his promises.
