Feb. 19-20

District 30 Tournament – Vaughn McFerren captured the 145-pound title at District 30 at Overbrook, one of four Blue Devils to advance to the Region 8 Tournament.

McFerren opened the tourney by pinning Williamstown’s Brandon Butler in 1:25, defeated Timber Creek’s Peyton Jones 10-4 in the semifinals and decked Overbrook’s Malachi Whitfield in 43 seconds in the championship bout.

Daniel Figueroa (160) and Brett Beebe (182) both finished in second place. Figueroa beat Williamstown’s Sean Tucker 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Highland’s Jared Colbert 11-3 in the semis. Figueroa lost to Winslow’s Charles McCall 3-1 in overtime in the final.

Beebe began the tournament by beating Overbrook’s John Miller 9-2 and then took down Highland’s Jon Villegas 5-4 in the semifinals. Beebe was pinned by Winslow’s Rashad Gayle in 1:38 in the title bout.

Heavyweight Hakeem Parker kept his season alive by pinning Williamstown’s Marsellos Battle in 40 seconds in the consolation final.

Anthony Roman (106), Andrew Mays (120), William Boyle (126), Anthony Tucci (170) and Tom Donio (195) all fell one win short of making it to regions.

Hammonton finished third in the team race with 120 points, 98 behind champion Highland and four behind Timber Creek.

Coming up – The four remaining Blue Devils will compete at the Region 8 Tournament at Egg Harbor Township, which starts Feb. 24. A top-3 finish would earn him a trip to the state tournament in Atlantic City.

Girls’ basketball

Feb. 15

Hammonton 38, St. Joseph 32 – Sara Peretti scored 13 points and McKenna Forry added 11 to lead the Blue Devils past rival St. Joseph. The win snapped a three-game losing streak

Feb. 16

Hammonton, 48, GCIT 28 – Peretti poured in a game-high 21 points to pace Hammonton. Forry netted 15 points and Macie Amoirello added six in the win.

Feb. 19

Hammonton 45, Bridgeton 10 – Forry and Peretti both scored a game-high 17 points, as the Blue Devils routed the Bulldogs. Amoirello added seven points for Hammonton.

Coming up – The Blue Devils are at Pitman on Feb. 25 and at Buena on Feb. 26 to wrap up the regular season. Hammonton, the No. 15 seed in the Group III South playoffs, are at No. 2 Highland on Feb. 29.

Boys’ basketball

Feb. 15

St. Joseph 73, Hammonton 60 – Peyton Mortellite scored a team-high 21 points in the Blue Devils’ loss. Reece Bassett scored 11 and Pat Costa chipped in 10.

Feb. 16

Hammonton 57, GCIT 34 – Bassett and Costa both scored 12 points, as the Blue Devils reached 10 wins for the season. Josh Troche and Mortellite added 10 points each for the victors.

Feb. 18

Woodstown 64, Hammonton 60 – Mortellite led all scorers with 20 points, including 12 from beyond the arc, but the Blue Devils’ second half rally came up short. Hammonton was outscored by 11 in the opening half, and never could fully climb out of the hole.

Bassett scored 17 points and Costa added 10.

Coming up – Hammonton hosts Pitman on Feb. 25 in the regular-season finale before traveling to Toms River East on Feb. 29 for the opening round of the Group III South playoffs. The Blue Devils are the No. 14 seed and Toms River East is No. 3.
