Hammonton 9, Highland 8 – Madison Mathes hit a homer and drove in three runs in the Blue Devils’ win. Paige Neilson and Kate Feby both added two hits and Mikaila Rodriguez and Geanna Serechia tripled and knocked in a run each.

Nicole Vaccarella was the winning pitcher, allowing five earned runs while striking out three in seven innings.

May 19

Kingsway 10, Hammonton 0 – Neilson picked up the Blue Devils’ only hit of the game.

Coming up – Hammonton, the No. 14 seed in the South Jersey Group 3 playoffs, was scheduled to face No. 3 Lacey on May 23. The winner is slated to play either No. 11 Toms River East or No. 6 Absegami on May 25.


May 16

Highland 6, Hammonton 5 – Izick Flores tripled and Gianni D’Antonio doubled in Hammonton’s loss. The Blue Devils led 4-1 after batting in the fourth inning, but Highland rallied to score four runs in the fifth.

May 18

Kingsway 6, Hammonton 0 – Giancarlo Palmieri singled twice for the Blue Devils.

May 20

Egg Harbor Twp. 13, Hammonton 3 – Hammonton allowed six runs in both the second and fourth innings.

Coming up – Hammonton received the No. 8 seed in the sectional playoffs and was scheduled to host No. 9 Central on May 23. The game ended too late for publication. The victor faces the No. 1 Ocean City-No. 16 Absegami winner on May 26

Boys’ tennis

May 16

Hammonton 4, Timber Creek 1 – Vincent Maimone and Jordan Mitchell picked up points at second and third singles for Hammonton.

Matt Huster and Vincent Piccari and Tyler Oster and Sean Trinh were victorious at doubles.

May 19

South Jersey Group 3 semifinals

Hammonton 3, Cumberland 2 – Third-seeded Hammonton won all three of its singles matches in three sets to advance to the sectional finals over No. 2 Cumberland.

At first singles, the Blue Devils’ Evan Barnett dropped the first set 2-6 to Jeb Taylor, but bounced back to win the final two sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Mitchell won two sets by tiebreaker at third singles. He won the first-set tiebreaker 7-3 and the third-set’s 9-7 to clinch a point. Maimone won the first set 6-1 before dropping the second set 7-5. He rebounded to win the third set 6-4.

Coming up – The Blue Devils were scheduled to meet top-seeded Mainland on May 23 in Linwood. The winner would win the South Jersey Group 3 title and advance to states.

Boys’ track

May 19

Tri-County Conference Showcase – Hammonton’s Anthony Maturano won the 100-meter championship in 10.98 seconds at Delsea Regional.

The Blue Devils were ninth out of 17 teams with 32 points. Deptford won the team title with 64 points, edging Highland by a point.

Hammonton’s 4x400 relay team finished second with a time of 3:25.95, Joe Dougherty placed third in the 1,600 (4:28.43) and Jon Vega won bronze in the shot put (48-63/4).

Coming up – Hammonton will compete in the South Jersey Group 3 meet on May 27 and 28 at Central Regional.

Girls’ track

May 19

Tri-County Conference Showcase – The Blue Devils’ Alexa Gardner won the javelin title with a throw of 134-3 and the 4x200 relay finished first in 2:02.34.

Hammonton finished sixth overall with 38.5 points in the team race, 28.5 points behind champion Clearview.

Victoria Massey was second in the 100 hurdles (15.99), third in the long jump (15-91/2) and sixth in the high jump (4-10), Madison Chiola was third in the javelin (109-3) and the 4x800 relay was third (10:19.63).

Coming up – Hammonton will compete in the South Jersey Group 3 meet on May 27 and 28 at Central Regional.
