South Jersey Group 3 final

Mainland 5, Hammonton 0 – The third-seeded Blue Devils saw their championship dreams come to an end at the hands of No. 1 Mainland.

Hammonton’s Jordan Mitchell forced a third set, but ultimately lost to Mainland’s Anthony Pangilinan at third singles. The two traded 6-1 wins before Pangilinan won the third set 10-6.

May 24

Hammonton 5, Highland 0 – Hammonton’s Evan Barnett won 6-1, 6-0 at first singles as the Blue Devils finished the season 16-4.

Vince Maimone won 6-2, 6-0 at second singles and Jordan Mitchell took a forfeit at third singles. At doubles, Matt Huster and Vince Piccari prevailed 6-4, 6-2 and Tyler Oster and Sean Trinh won 6-4, 6-1.


May 25

South Jersey Group 3 first round

Central Regional 16, Hammonton 1 – The eighth-seeded Blue Devils allowed a dozen runs in the first inning of their playoff loss to No. 9 Central.

Hammonton’s Steve Costa hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the team’s lone run. The loss was the Blue Devils’ fifth straight, as they finished the season with a 9-13 record.


May 23

South Jersey Group 3 first round

Lacey 12, Hammonton 4: The Blue Devils’ Madison Mathes doubled, walked and scored a run, but No. 14 Hammonton was unable to upset No. 3 Lacey.

The Blue Devils opened the game with three runs to take an early lead, but the Lions scored a run in the first inning and four in the second to jump ahead. Lacey put the game away with five runs in the fourth.

Hammonton ended the year with a 7-11 record after losing six of its final seven games.

Boys’ track

May 27-28

South Jersey Group 3 meet – Hammonton’s Joe Dougherty finished fourth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 28.75 seconds at Central Regional in Bayville to advance to the state tournament. Dougherty was also sixth in the 3,200 (10:10.85).

The top six finishers in each event advanced.

The 4x100 relay of Dayquan Murray, David Obeng, Connor Stibich and Ronald Gibson placed fourth (44.28), Juvante Thompson was fifth in 400 (50.52), the 4x400 of Jon Maturano, Thompson, Gibson and Stibich took fifth (3:27.44) and the 4x800 of Jordan Ciocco, Thompson, James Brady and Shawn DiBona also finished fifth (8:29.26).

Coming up – The Blue Devils will take part at states, hosted by North Burlington, on June 3-4.

Girls’ track

May 27-28

South Jersey Group 3 meet – Hammonton’s Victoria Massey broke a pair of school records and qualified for states in two events at Central. Massey made the 100 hurdle finals with a time of 15.53, the best in program history. She later placed fifth in 16.11. Massey was also sixth in the long jump with a record leap of 17-3/4.

Hammonton’s Madison Chiola and Gianna Figueroa finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the javelin. Chiola threw 105 feet, 3 inches and Figueroa’s toss was 103-1. Ashley Ranere finished sixth in the 3,200 (12:05.4).

Coming up – The Blue Devils will take part at states, hosted by North Burlington, on June 3-4.
