Urgent alert: Give blood and save a life

The American Red Cross urges those who have never given blood before, as well as those who haven’t given recently, to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help sustain a sufficient community blood supply this summer.

While the need for blood is constant during the summer months, the Red Cross experiences a drastic decline in new donors. Nationwide, about 32 percent fewer new blood donors, and more than 40 percent fewer in New Jersey, came out to give last summer than during the rest of the year. Additionally, many schools where blood drives are held, and where new donors give, are not in session, and current donors often delay giving due to summer vacation plans.

While about 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood, less than 10 percent of those eligible actually do. The blood donation process takes about an hour with the actual donation only taking about 10 minutes.

Whether new to donating blood or a lifelong donor, the Red Cross offers helpful tips for an enjoyable donation experience:

  • As much as possible, eat iron-rich foods leading up to your donation.
  • Hydrate: drink an extra 16 oz. of liquid before and after the donation.
  • Have a healthy meal before the donation.
  • Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be raised above the elbow.
  • Complete a RapidPass on the day of donation, prior to arriving, to save time.
  • Remember to bring picture identification, blood donor card or two other forms of identification.

“Every day, we have thousands of lives to help save, but blood and platelet donations often do not keep pace with hospital demand during the summer months,” said Alana Mauger, external communications manager, Penn Jersey Blood Services Region “In less time than it can take to go out to eat, you can make a lifesaving difference for cancer patients, accident victims and others in need.”

Animal shelter waiving adoption fee for cats, dogs

PLEASANTVILLE - The Atlantic County Animal Shelter is waiving the $85 adoption fee for cats and kittens during June in celebration of “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.”

The shelter has a wide selection of felines of various ages and temperaments that are already neutered and available for immediate release to eligible adoptees. The public is invited to visit the shelter during normal operating hours, 1 to 4 p.m Monday, 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the shelter at 240 Old Turnpike Ave.

“In addition to adorable kittens, we also have senior cats, cats with special needs, and adult-bonded pairs of cats that typically have a more difficult time finding forever homes but make wonderful companions,” said Kathy Kelsey, animal shelter manager. “They are some of the animals we hope will benefit most from this promotion.”

Shelter adoptions include mandatory sterilization, age appropriate vaccinations, diagnostic testing, a microchip and free veterinary consultation.

The AMI Foundation’s Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Digital Mammography Van will visit the following Atlantic County locations this month:

  • June 16, ShopRite in Hammonton.
  • June 21, Southern Jersey Family Medicine in Pleasantville.
  • June 22, Atlantic County Health Services in Northfield.

The screenings are for women age 40 and older with no current or past breast issues. Screenings are processed through their insurance. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome. A prescription may not be needed.

Enjoy lunch and learn about health care at Gilda’s Club

LINWOOD - Gilda’s Club South Jersey will host “Lunch and Learn: Headaches, Back Pains and Our Health Care System,” from noon to 2 p.m. June 12 at 700 New Road.

A representative of Santoro Chiropractic and Wellness Center will discuss causes and solutions for headaches and back pains. They will discuss the healthcare system, common barriers to care and alternative options.

Learn how to navigate the Medicare coverage, system

Atlantic County residents who are interested in learning how to navigate through the Medicare system and make informed decisions about their Medicare coverage are invited to attend a free, “New to Medicare” workshop.

The schedule includes:

Hear the acoustic jam session during Hammonton’s Third Thursday

HAMMONTON - Stockton University’s Kramer Hall will participate in Downtown Hammonton’s Third Thursday on June 15.

Stop in from 6 to 8 p.m. for “Jammonton,” an impromptu, acoustic jam session with a twist. June’s edition will incorporate wind instruments to celebrate the event’s “Summer Wind” theme.

Musicians of all skill levels are invited to bring their own acoustic or wind instruments and sheet music to Kramer Hall at 30 Front St. Participants and music fans invited to play, listen and converse throughout the night.

YMCA of Vineland bringing back Flamingo Flocking

Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA/YMCA of Vineland has announced the return of Flamingo Flocking, a humorous fundraiser which encourages participants to pay to have plastic pink birds anonymously parked on friends’ lawns or property.

If the birds’ recipients are too embarrassed to leave the birds on their lawn, they can pay a fee to have the ornaments removed. For a donation, they can discover who flocked them. They can also have the flock sent to someone else. Insurance to avoid being “flocked” is also available.

Proceeds from this fun fundraiser will benefit the YMCA’s Annual Giving Campaign.

Cost for flocking ranges from $35 for a “sprinkling of pink” to $65 for “a flourish of feathers” and $100 for a full flock. Insurance is $25.

Shore Medical hosting Farmers Market, Craft Fair on Fridays

SOMERS POINT - Keeping with its mission of caring for the community, Shore Medical Center announced it has partnered with local event company, The AC Hub, and local volunteer organization, Somers Point-Community First, to present the 2017 Farmers Market and Craft Fair from 2 to 6 p.m. Fridays, from June 16 through Sept. 8 in front of the hospital on Bay Avenue between Medical Center Way and New York Avenue. A portion of the proceeds from the weekly event will be donated to Shore’s Cancer Center.

“We tested the waters with our Farmers Market and Craft Fair in the fall, and the response was incredible,” said Brian Cahill, marketing director for Shore Medical Center. “This summer’s market, which will be held every Friday afternoon, will feature even more local produce, food and craft vendors, plus additional offerings like nutrition and wellness educators, food vendors, yoga, local honey, fresh cut flowers and more.”

“We are excited to partner with Shore Medical Center in bringing a farmers market and craft fair to the Somers Point community every Friday this summer,” said Dina Guzzardo, director of public relations for The Hub. “This market will provide an opportunity for local vendors to offer a vast selection of diverse items as well as the benefit to the neighborhood to come together and purchase fresh fruits and vegetables as well as handmade treasures and other quality items. Our pleasure and priority is always to provide a benefit to the local community. In keeping with our culture and belief in the importance of giving back, we will donate a portion of the proceeds to Shore Medical Center’s Cancer Center.”

Plagido’s Winery of Hammonton earns Winery of the Year honors

HAMMONTON - Plagido’s Winery of Hammonton earned Winery of the Year honors for the second consecutive year in the annual New Jersey Wine Competition, which is organized for the Garden State Wine Growers Association by Dr. Gary Pavlis of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. The competition, which was held in May, featured wines from 21 New Jersey wineries.

The Governor’s Cup for Best Grape wine went to Fox Hollow Vineyards of Holmdel for its 2014 Cabernet Franc, which also won Best Vinifera wine. Terhune Orchards of Princeton won the Governor’s Cup for fruit wine for its non-vintage Blueberry wine and Sharrott Winery of Blue Anchor took home the Governor’s Cup for Best Dessert wine for its 2013 Wicked Port, which also won for Best Hybrid wine.

The Winery of the Year, Governor’s Cup and Best in Class awards will be presented to the wineries during an event this month in Trenton.

In winning Winery of the Year, Plagido’s Winery scored eight overall medals including a gold medal for the non-vintage Blackberry Vigoroso; four silver medals its 2015 Cab Franc, 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, non-vintage Concetta’s Casalinga and 2015 Cour d’Est and three bronze medals for its non-vintage Chambourcin, 2015 Cab Franc/Merlot and non-vintage Niagara.

“What an honor it is to win this award two straight years,” said Ollie Tomasello. “This is certainly a validation of all the hard work and dedication by our family and staff to develop exceptional wine here at Plagido’s Winery that is enjoyed by our customers. We invite all wine drinkers to come to Hammonton and visit our winery and experience the quality of our wines for themselves.”

Other notable awards went to DiMatteo Vineyards of Hammonton winning Best American wine honors for its non-vintage Pasquale Red wine and Heritage Vineyards of Mullica Hill for Best Sparkling wine honors for the 2014 Brut. Sharrott Winery earned the most medals in the competition with 12, including two gold, four silver and six bronze medals. Heritage Vineyards had 10 medals, scoring eight silver and two bronze medals, and Monroeville Vineyard and Winery in Monroeville also took home 10 medals with three silver and seven bronze medals.

In addition to winning the Governor’s Cup for Best Fruit wine, Terhune Orchards also led all entrants with three gold medals winning for the non-vintage Harvest Blue, non-vintage Blossum White and non-vintage Just Peachy wines. Terhune Orchards totaled nine medals with their three gold medal tallies and two silver and four bronze medals.

The GSWGA is a coalition of nearly 50 wineries and vineyards across New Jersey, dedicated to raising the quality and awareness of New Jersey wine.
