After a record-setting number of daily COVID cases on Christmas, New Jersey reported more than 12,000 new cases the day after.

State officials announced 12,538 positive COVID tests on Sunday along with seven new deaths. Sunday's numbers are down after New Jersey set records for daily COVID infections this week – peaking at 16,626 on Saturday.

The rise in numbers is likely fueled by the rapidly spreading omicron variant and an uptick in testing amid the holiday season.
