Camden County murder suspect shot dead by police in Millville
WINSLOW - Police on Saturday fatally shot a man suspected of killing another man and wounded a woman in a Winslow home before leading officers on a chase to Millville, authorities said.
Two young children also were reported missing during the violent episode. They were found safe later in the day in Salem County.
The incident started early Saturday morning at a home on Woodhaven Way in Winslow, where police responding to a 911 call found the body of 47-year-old Derek White of Salem around 6:15 a.m.
A 26-year-old woman, whose name was not released, also had been shot in the home, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
The “seriously wounded” woman was rushed to a hospital for treatment, said the prosecutor's office.
Two children, ages two and three, were missing from the home, the prosecutor’s office said.
The children, who had been missing since about 4:30 a.m., “were last seen with their father, a 55-year-old Pennsville man, in the Salem County area,” according to the prosecutor’s office.
It said officers saw the father driving near the Winslow home and began a chase that led about 20 miles to Millville, Cumberland County.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was fatally shot by police around 9:10 a.m. on Holly Berry Lane in Millville, said the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.
One Millville police officer and two Winslow police officers were at the scene of the shooting, said Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae.
The suspect was pronounced dead at an area hospital, she said.
Additional details of both shootings were not immediately available.
The missing children were located safe at approximately 12:30 Saturday afternoon.
Webb-McRae said the police-involved shooting is being investigated by the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, with the Camden County Prosecutor's Office assisting.
This is the second police-involved shooting in Millville in 2018, although the circumstances are very different between the two cases.
On Jan. 22, Millville resident Edward C. Gandy Jr. was shot to death on North High Street at McNeal Street after refusing orders to stop walking toward an officer and pointing his hands at officers while apparently holding an object.
Gandy set up the confrontation with phone calls to 911 saying he had a loaded firearm and was “feeling homicidal.” The dead man’s mother reported her son had mental problems.
