CAMDEN - A Moorestown man is accused of repeatedly gassing up his car at the expense of the U.S. Postal Service.

Demetrius Monroe, 42, used a Postal Service credit card to pay for personal gas purchases worth $3,100 between March 2015 and September 2017, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in federal court in Camden.

He faces a charge of stealing public money.

Monroe, a rural carrier in Atco, was given the credit card to buy gas for his Postal Service vehicle, the complaint says.

He allegedly used a co-worker's personal identification number when buying gas for his own vehicle, a Lexus RX 350, says the complaint.

Surveillance video showed a vehicle matching the Lexus at Monroe's last purchase — $43 worth of super unleaded at a Wawa in Marlton.

"The video also shows a male with the name 'Monroe' on the back of his shirt at the vehicle and inside Wawa," the complaint says.

Monroe, who was hired by the Postal Service in 2004, was out on sick leave at the time of the final purchase, it adds. He is no longer a Postal Service employee.

The complaint says Monroe admitted his actions when questioned in October 2017 by special pgents of the Postal Service Office of Inspector General.

"I feel on ruff times with money," he said in a written statement at that time, according to the complaint. "I was wrong and that is no excuse for what I did."
