On Tuesday, New Jersey recorded nearly 4,000 new cases of COVID-19, one of the largest totals since the peak of the pandemic in April, said Gov. Phil Murphy, who called the increase "devastating."

There were also 1,645 people hospitalized with the disease, the most since June, and 21 new confirmed deaths statewide, he said.

Earlier this week, Murphy announced new restrictions on bars, restaurants and indoor youth sports in response to a surge in new cases across the state. On Monday, New Jersey reported 2,075 new cases, more than 1,500 patients hospitalized and 11 new deaths.

The state's seven-day average now exceeds 2,000 and on Saturday, more than 3,000 new cases were reported in one day for the first time since the worst of the spring surge in late April.

Monmouth County has been consistently reporting more than 100 new cases daily.
